On Point

You have the ability to land in a general area—or right on point—of any subject or topic you wish. Like a skydiver who wants to land in a particular region, you have the foresight to choose where the plane should drop you, check the winds, and then use the controls to guide yourself the rest of the way. Sometimes outside circumstances may cause you to maneuver differently, but if you are properly trained, you will still arrive close to the intended destination.

Regulating your nervous system, and practicing the rhythm and control of how you respond, is vital to enacting your skills when needed. Training—whether through real practice or virtual simulation—is essential. Virtual training can be as effective as physical, onsite training if you are able to fully immerse yourself in the environment, to feel as though you are truly in the situation. If you approach it as something outside of you, you may become accomplished at the game but still unprepared to respond when the situation arises in physical reality.

Even training for warfare can be done virtually if fully immersive. Yet your internal physical training—the use of breath to calm or activate your nervous system—is paramount. Without it, you may not recognize the sensations of fight, flight, or freeze when your body is triggered.

True preparation requires all dimensions: physical endurance, mental situational awareness, and neurological training of your nervous system. This comprehensive preparation sets you up for success. Go in only partially trained, and your results will be minimal. Arriving “on point,” exactly where you intended, comes from both preparation and envisioning the event as though it has already been experienced.

Know your reactions before the situation arises. Practice and preparation on the training field are far more important than raw talent when you step into the game or onto the field. Feel your way toward success, and when you arrive, it will feel natural—as if it could not have been otherwise.
